The large number of informal settlements illegally connected to the Tshwane Metro’s power network is causing the already unreliable network to become even more unstable.
Illegal connections pose serious safety risks to residents and frequently result in power outages in the Metro due to the network being overloaded.
Last December, the Tshwane Metro identified 575 informal settlements that are expanding very quickly as a result of illegal land occupations.
The Metro’s Petition Committee also received around 20 petitions from informal settlements requesting to be temporarily connected to the power network.
The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) will not support these requests should they be tabled to the Council.
It is almost impossible to temporarily supply power to informal settlements while the Metro is currently unable to maintain its existing network to reliably supply power to loyal ratepayers.
The Freedom Front Plus demands that action be taken against residents with illegal power connections in both informal and formal residential areas. They are illegally consuming power at the expense of loyal taxpayers.
