HRC prepares for court after Vhembe misses deadline

The Vhembe District Municipality (Louis Trichardt, Musina) in Limpopo failed to meet a deadline set by the Human Rights Commission (HRC) regarding ongoing water shortages, and the HRC has confirmed that it will now proceed with legal action.

The FF Plus initiated the matter.

During a telephonic conversation with the HRC’s Senior Provincial Legal Official, adv Badantswana Munei, the FF Plus was assured that legal action is the next step.

The HRC instructed eleven water-service authorities in the province, of which the Vhembe District Municipality is one, to issue reports on how these authorities are going to address the water crisis affecting residents.

The reports were also supposed to detail the progress made with implementing the HRC’s recommendations in resolving the crisis.

These reports should have been submitted by 16 January 2024.

The HRC, furthermore, confirmed that it will not grant the relevant water-service authorities an extension for compiling their reports and will now proceed with its final assessment of the current situation in preparation for a court case.

The FF Plus is delighted that the next step following the party’s intervention is legal action and will provide support where necessary.

Communities are encouraged to remain patient seeing as a court case of this nature will take quite some time.
