The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) emphasised in the debate on the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s 2026/27 budget that the province’s agricultural potential is underutilised.
Although Gauteng is the smallest province in South Africa, it remains the economic heartbeat of the country. That is precisely why every hectare of productive agricultural land should be protected and optimally utilised to promote food production, economic growth and job creation.
The Freedom Front Plus is deeply concerned about the persistent loss of valuable agricultural land due to unbridled urban expansion and poor spatial planning.
Once productive land is lost, it is virtually impossible to restore. The province needs a comprehensive strategy to protect high-potential agricultural land and provide farmers with the support they need to expand production.
Farmers face growing challenges, including rising input costs, infrastructure decay, water insecurity, livestock theft and a lack of support.
Still, the success of government programmes is measured by the number of projects launched rather than the number of farmers who establish sustainable enterprises, create jobs and contribute to the economy.
The recent outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease and other livestock diseases have further highlighted the need for stronger biosecurity, effective traceability systems and better risk management.
These areas require urgent attention and greater investment.
Agriculture should be regarded as a strategic economic asset, not just a social development instrument.
Through better planning, stronger leadership and targeted investment, Gauteng can boost its food security, create more job opportunities and become less dependent on other provinces.
The Freedom Front Plus will intensify its oversight role to unlock the province’s agricultural potential. The people of Gauteng deserve nothing less.
