The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) did not support the proposal of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro (NMBM) to write off R2,69 billion in water-related debt. This debt dates back to 1 May 2021.
In the 2023/2024 financial year, the Metro suffered water losses of 48,66%, which highlights the need for infrastructure upgrades and proper management.
The proposal to write off debt for properties valued up to R550 000 increases the financial burden on loyal taxpayers and undermines fiscal stability.
There is an Assistance to the Poor (ATTP) programme in place to support low-income households. A general debt forgiveness cannot be granted, though.
The Freedom Front Plus recognises the importance of supporting vulnerable communities, but not at the expense of middle-class residents, who are the Metro’s cash cows.
The Freedom Front Plus proposes that the Metro should rather focus on repairing water infrastructure, curbing water theft and implementing an effective debt collection strategy before resorting to such drastic measures.
