Fire engines used to fill up water tanks for councillors in Germiston

It is unacceptable that the Ekurhuleni Metro’s emergency services were deployed to fill up water tanks at the Germiston Council Chambers, while residents elsewhere in the Metro have to make do without water for days.

The reason for the decision was to ensure that councillors and officials have access to water during today’s council meeting.

Meanwhile, elderly residents of Tweedy Park in Brakpan have had to get by without running water for five consecutive days. This means senior citizens cannot bathe, prepare meals or flush toilets.

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) wants the Metro to extend a helping hand to these elderly residents by sending a water tanker to the area.

The party will ask probing questions at next week’s Community Safety Committee meeting to establish who authorised the deployment of the fire engines and what alternative plans are in place to supply water to Tweedy Park residents.

The Freedom Front Plus demands a report, accountability and a written plan to ensure that vulnerable residents are supplied with emergency water before councillors help themselves to it.
