The FF Plus supports the establishment of an Integrated By-law Enforcement Committee for the Tshwane Metro, involving various departments to facilitate future cooperation.
Officials had the opportunity to discuss and determine the objectives of the Committee themselves.
The following were discussed during the workshops: common by-law violations, existing gaps in by-law enforcement, residents’ satisfaction with the enforcement of by-laws, the need for oversight, potential legal and non-legal partners in by-law enforcement, resources required, current challenges, and the requirements for successfully prosecuting by-law offenders.
Tshwane is experiencing an increase in lawlessness, which prompted the process. Several factors have contributed to the rise in crime and if the Metro wants to restore law and order, the enforcement of by-laws needs to be properly coordinated.
During the workshops, the need to find a new and improved approach to by-law enforcement was identified, and several departments will have to cooperate to achieve this.
Residents are often under the impression that the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) is solely responsible for law enforcement
While, in fact, by-laws can be enforced by a number of other departments with the TMPD playing a supportive role. Cooperation is key, and the main objective is to establish a joint enforcement centre.
The FF Plus thanked the Chief of Metro Police, Commissioner Yolanda Farao, and her TMPD team for their hard work, and wishes the Integrated By-law Enforcement Committee all the best for fulfilling its mandate and successfully performing its duties.
