The FF Plus in the Tshwane Metro Council welcomes the appointment of Sakkie du Plooy as the full-time chairperson of the Metro’s government oversight committee.
The party believes that Du Plooy will fulfil a key role in maintaining a firm grip on the Metro’s reins and helping it go from strength to strength.
No extra costs, beyond what has already been budgeted for the 2023/2024 financial year, will be incurred for this position. In fact, the city might even save money if the tasks are executed correctly.
One of the considerations with the appointment of the full-time chairperson for the government oversight committee was the Auditor-General’s 2021/22 annual financial report, which stressed that poor oversight results in mismanagement.
The government oversight committee will see to it that the various portfolio committees perform better so that the Metro Council’s decisions are properly implemented for all Metro residents’ benefit.
It is also important to ensure that committee chairpersons are properly equipped to do their jobs and guide their respective committees in overseeing the departments for which they are responsible.
One of Du Plooy’s responsibilities is communicating with the public, which often fell short in the past.
The large number of backlogged petitions submitted by members of the public will now be given the attention they deserve as well.
The Metro’s governance model, which was drafted in 2011, will also be revised.
It is critically important to establish an effective and corruption-free government in the Metro for the sake of every resident.
Du Plooy will also fulfil the role of chairperson in council meetings when the Speaker is unavailable.
The party also wants to congratulate Johann van der Spuy on his appointment as chairperson of the Section 79 committee on shared services.
Van der Spuy is now part of the team overseeing the legal department, personnel, properties belonging to the Metro, the vehicle fleet and IT functions.
The FF Plus wishes Du Plooy and Van der Spuy all the best for the mammoth task that lies ahead.
