The FF Plus in Kempton Park had to urgently intervene on Monday after a water pipe burst in Birchleigh, causing streams of water to run down Lindeque Avenue and create an enormous hole in the pavement.
The water pipe burst two days ago and was repaired today after the FF Plus put constant pressure on the Ekurhuleni Metro Council’s Department of Water.
The FF Plus has already reported 35 water leakages in Kempton Park to the Department of Water since 1 January.
The actual number is possibly much higher seeing as residents are also reporting complaints to the Metro’s Service Centre.
It is a disgrace that Kempton Park’s critical infrastructure has been allowed to decay to such an extent that residents often must get by without water for long periods of time.
Water is a valuable commodity, and it is unacceptable that the Metro’s turnaround time for repairing leakages is so long.
The FF Plus warned the ANC/EFF government last year that its maintenance budget is not enough to maintain all the infrastructure.
To prevent frequent water leakages, the Metro will have to make significant adjustments to its budget to replace much of the water infrastructure.
The FF Plus will make use of the opportunity it has during the tabling of the budget to once again make practical recommendations for how the Metro can stop the decay.
After all, Kempton Park residents are paying for these services, so, it is unfair that their taps are running dry while thousands of litres of drinking water flows down the street.
Kempton Park residents deserve better.
Residents are encouraged to report any service delivery problems in Kempton Park to Jean Kriek on the following number: 079 224 7321.
