The FF Plus is going to ask the tax ombudsman to investigate the VAT refund of R70 million made to the Gupta-owned company, Oakbay Investments, last week, says adv. Anton Alberts, FF Plus parliamentary spokesperson for finances.
In an article by Network24, it is alleged that the Commissioner of SARS, Tom Moyane, intervened personally in order to make the seemingly irregular refund possible. According to adv. Alberts, these are very serious allegations and the ombudsman will be asked to investigate Moyane’s role in the payment in particular.
He says that damning new evidence comes to light nearly every week and it clearly goes to show just how great the Gupta’s influence is on government workings as well as on various important government officials.
Last week in parliament, adv. Alberts also strongly criticised the minister of public enterprises, Lynne Brown, for the plundering of government assets and said that it is reminiscent of a school of piranhas stripping its prey’s flesh off the bone.
“The plundering is busy intensifying very quickly and it is not surprising when even more allegations and more names of people involved, like Moyane, come to light.
“What is, however, shocking is the arrogance of these capturers. It is as if they know that they can act with impunity and therefore go to no trouble whatsoever to try and conceal their handiwork.
“They are obviously following the example set by our state president who, even in parliament, simply laughs in the face of accusations of state capture and the Gupta’s role therein,” says adv. Alberts.
