The FF Plus insists that SANRAL, structural engineers and the Ekurhuleni Metro’s Department of Roads and Stormwater must urgently come up with a solution to make the Elgin Bridge in Kempton Park safer.
This follows the most recent incident in which a truck carrying heavy cement blocks nearly caused a fatal accident when it collided with the bridge.
The Elgin Bridge has been a problem for years, particularly for motorists using the Pretoria Road to commute because heavy vehicles often ignore the bridge’s height restriction.
Sometimes, up to two or three trucks get stuck under the bridge per week.
The FF Plus proposes that heavy vehicles should make use of an alternative route until a solution to make the Elgin Bridge safer is found.
The FF Plus will continue to put pressure on the Metro to take decisive action so as to prevent any further possible accidents.
