FF Plus puts pressure on government over Language Act

The FF Plus again put pressure on government over the implementation of the Use of Official Languages Act (Language Act) after deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa stressed the importance of every citizen in the country being served in the linguae of their choice.

Dr. Pieter Mulder, Leader of the Freedom Front Plus said that the experience of South Africans in this regard is exactly the opposite and that the FF Plus is not convinced that the government is serious about the implementation of the Language Act.

He said the proof thereof is that has already missed the deadline for the implementation of the Act, which was passed in 2012 already. A new target date was set for May of this year.

According to Dr. Mulder everything points to the government again missing the deadline as many departments have still not implemented the prescriptions of the Act.

He asked deputy president Ramaphosa which steps will be taken to ensure that it is implemented to which Ramaphosa replied that the state will do everything in its power to make the deadline.

Dr. Mulder said the FF Plus welcomes the undertaking, but is sceptical about the government’s commitment to keep its word. Should it not happen, a court application will possibly have to be considered to force the government to implement the Act, Dr. Mulder said.
