FF Plus monitors illegal land occupation at Stilfontein in the North West

The FF Plus has already taken action in response to a situation at Stilfontein in the North West where hundreds of people started to illegally occupy a piece of land next to the town on Sunday evening (21 July).

In an apparently orchestrated action, the occupants – with the help of municipal officials from the Matlosana Municipality – started to measure out and demarcate stands. Municipal trucks were observed as they brought poles and pipes for the people with which they could demarcate stands.

FF Plus Members of Parliament, an FF Plus Member of the Provincial Legislature and local FF Plus councillors are monitoring the situation along with the police and the AfriForum neighbourhood watch.

The FF Plus has also already lodged a complaint with the Matlosana council about the illegal use of municipal property and demands that strict action must immediately be taken against the relevant officials who helped the occupants.

Erns Kleynhans, a member of the provincial Legislature in the North West, took up the matter with the MEC for Public Works and requested the local government to immediately take steps to stop the illegal land occupation.

The FF Plus has determined that the land does indeed belong to the government, but that Transnet has a servitude on the land for a pipeline that runs across it. The police can only take further steps if the government, as owner of the land, lodges a complaint against the occupants.

Due to the already existing service delivery problems, the authorities must act quickly in this case seeing as such an occupation could seriously threaten the sustainable survival of Stilfontein.

The FF Plus will continue to fight this type of anarchism on all levels of government. The rights and interests of law-abiding citizens must be protected.
