The FF Plus sent an official letter to the Limpopo MEC for Cooperative Governance, Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements, Mr Baisikopo Makamu, requesting that the provincial government must urgently intervene in the illegal occupation of land in Moogkopong (Naboomspruit).
Although the Modimolle-Mookgophong Local Municipality did obtain a court order to put an end to the illegal occupation of land and the establishment of an informal settlement, it is still going on.
The land occupation brings about a decrease in the value of properties owned by Moogkopong residents, damage to the environment and a rise in criminal activities. The illegal settlements also do not have access to municipal services, like water, electricity and sanitation.
Such illegal land occupations are not limited to the Modimolle-Mookgophong Municipality and occur across the province. It puts more financial pressure on the municipalities that are already struggling to provide basic services to residents.
The FF Plus demands that the provincial government must find a permanent solution to the illegal land occupations in Limpopo.
