The FF Plus demanded today in a letter to the Mayor of the Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality, Ms Zodwa Mzindle, that the Municipality should immediately do an assessment to determine the extent of the flood damage in Margate.
This is to enable the provincial Disaster Management Centre to, in terms of the relevant legislation, implement an assistance programme for the affected people and businesses in the area.
Such an assessment is vital for enabling the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government to intervene swiftly and effectively, and formally declare it a disaster area so that assistance funds can be made available.
Sunday evening’s heavy rainstorm caused severe damage to businesses, residential homes, holiday units and infrastructure.
The FF Plus will keep monitoring the progress of the prescribed processes to ensure that the ANC-controlled Municipality and provincial government do not drag their feet in providing disaster aid again.
