FF Plus asks provincial government to intervene at Mokopane dumping site

The FF Plus has asked Limpopo MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, Thabo Mokone, to urgently intervene at the Mokopane (Potgietersrus) dumping site, which has been on fire since last weekend and poses a serious health risk to residents.

This is not the first time that fires broke out at the dumping site.

In August 2020, the FF Plus lodged a complaint with the Human Rights Commission (HRC) and the Green Scorpions due to the mismanagement and dilapidated condition of the dumping site. It also does not comply with the minimum requirements for dumping sites in terms of the Waste Management Act.

The Green Scorpions paid a visit to the site and made recommendations, however, the Mogalakwena Local Municipality was unable to implement those recommendations as a result of financial mismanagement.

This has left the FF Plus with no other choice but to ask the provincial government to step in and compel the Municipality to fulfil its duties towards the community.

The ANC-controlled Municipality must not be allowed to continue jeopardising the health of residents and causing environmental damage due to mismanagement and corruption.

The Bill of Rights stipulates that every person has the right to live and work in an environment that is not detrimental to their wellbeing or health and that pollution and ecological destruction must be brought to an end. This is, however, not the case in Mokopane.

Residents must make use of the opportunity they have with the local government elections on 1 November to stand up for their rights and stand with the FF Plus to get rid of the incompetent ANC in Mokopane. The decline and mismanagement must be brought to an end.
