The FF Plus has requested the University of the Western Cape to urgently institute measures to ensure the safety of white, brown and black students after a huge group of students wearing t-shirts of the ANC and EFF disrupted classes, damaged property and attacked students and threatened to kill them.
Adv. Anton Alberts, the FF Plus' parliamentary spokesperson on higher education, said the incident took place on the main campus of the UWC yesterday. A number of black students are apparently dissatisfied because their co-students cannot afford registration fees and the protest action was held to force the university to write off the registration fees.
“According to eye-witnesses, who had made cellular phone recordings of the event, groups of students disrupted the whole of the campus. Some of them burst into class rooms, danced on tables and broke the cellular phones and computers of the attending students.
“There was also at least one incident where protestors had altercations with white and brown students and made death threats against these students.
“The FF Plus was informed this morning that a person died as a result of the protest action. The university has still not been able to confirm this.
“The FF Plus has in the meantime requested the UWC to immediately take steps to ensure the personal safety of students, to create an environment in which students could study without fear or intimidation and to have the police investigate the incident and threats by the police,” Adv. Alberts said.
