FF Plus asks for intervention to prevent possible strike by healthcare workers in Limpopo

The FF Plus sent an official letter to the Limpopo MEC for Health, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, today requesting her to urgently step in to avert a possible strike by healthcare workers in Limpopo.

On the brink of a possible third wave of Covid-19, the province cannot afford healthcare workers going on strike.

Healthcare workers have been protesting at hospitals all over the province since yesterday to show their dissatisfaction with the standardised work schedules that the provincial Department of Health implemented.

And although the provincial Department has since temporarily withdrawn the work schedules, the doctors at some hospitals seem to be on a go-slow strike and patients are reportedly being turned away.

According to Ramathuba, healthcare workers are exploiting overtime and the issue is preventing the Department from appointing more healthcare workers as well as procuring medical equipment, medicine and ambulances.

The FF Plus cautioned Dr Ramathuba and the provincial Department of Health in March 2020 already to focus on being properly prepared and maintaining a good standard of general healthcare services in the province.

The party has also lodged complaints with the Human Rights Commission (HRC) about the poor service delivery and alleged negligence in the provincial healthcare sector.
