A thousand rand reward for the name of the self-appointed language imperialist from the University of Stellenbosch (US) so that an FAK songbook can be donated to her and a male a cappella choir, also from the University, to enable them to get acquainted with the many wonderful sing-along songs in Afrikaans.
This seems to be exactly what is needed at the US after it came to light that an unknown House Committee member (HC member) from the women’s hostel Minerva requested a men's choir that wanted to entertain the female students with a few songs not to sing anything in Afrikaans.
"Sing songs in English only, please," was the message sent to the leadership of the men's hostel that wanted to deliver the a cappella performance. (Network24: US-koshuis laat ‘net Engelse liedjies’ vir sêr toe; 30 March 2021).
The latest FAK songbook contains many wonderful songs and the FF Plus is convinced that the choir would like to rehearse them so that they can use these songs to entertain the young women of Minerva and other hostels in the future.
The FF Plus notes the objection against the "song ban" voiced by the student organisation StudentePlein and welcomes it.
Clearly, some students consider the US's silence on the matter of Afrikaans oppression as permission to blatantly further the agenda on campus.
This approach will certainly not build bridges between students and an amiable FAK sing-along event will probably do much more for cultural cohesion among students at the US than the University's language policy is currently doing.
