The FF Plus has urgently requested the Gauteng Police Commissioner, Lt.-Gen. Elias Mawela, to equip police officers with enough firearms, ammunition and vehicles to enable them to bring the current violent riots under control.
The FF Plus has also asked the Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Faith Masibuko, to convene an urgent Community Safety Committee meeting to discuss the current situation. There the FF Plus plans to request additional protection for government infrastructure, like state buildings, train stations and main roads.
The temporary suspension of services by Metrorail and the Rea Vaya bus service was necessitated by the need to protect not only the networks, but also the employees and passengers.
Meanwhile, Rand Water and City Power announced that their employees cannot provide services on ground level due to the riots.
Looters must not be allowed to plunder shops and torch vehicles. The economy has already been brought to its knees due to the Covid-19 restrictions and now there are even more businessowners, whose enterprises have been looted and damaged, who have no other choice but to close their doors permanently.
The targeting of freight trucks travelling from KwaZulu Natal to Gauteng is strongly condemned as it may result in shortages of essentials in Gauteng.
The FF Plus is concerned that the police force and intelligence networks have not implemented any preventative measures to subdue the violent riots in Gauteng and the party ascribes it to a lack of political will to bring the situation under control.
