There seems to be no end to the financial woes of the Emfuleni Local Municipality (Evaton, Sebokeng, Vaal Oewer, Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging).
The Municipality is now unable to pay its electricity contractors and suppliers.
The Cw5 area of Vanderbijlpark has been without power for 18 days because electricity contractors are refusing to work on the power issue due to non-payment.
And last Monday, the Municipality’s supplier of printers disconnected its printers and removed ink cartridges, also due to non-payment.
As a result, the Municipality’s administrative division cannot function as it should.
The Municipality, furthermore, does not have the money needed to procure a transformer for the Ne3 substation, which was destroyed in a fire on 11 April. Large industrial plants have since been without power, so, manufacturing and production have ground to a halt.
If the problem persists, it is uncertain whether Emfuleni will be able to pay its officials, workers and councillors at the end of the month.
There is no stopping the decay of Emfuleni under ANC rule with residents bearing the brunt.
To turn Emfuleni around, the ANC and its incompetent cadres need to be ousted.
Residents should seize the opportunity to do so with the next local government elections.
