The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) supported the motions of no confidence in both the EFF Speaker, Ms. Nthabiseng Tshivhenga, and the ANC Mayor, Mr. Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, of the Ekurhuleni Metro Council this week (Thursday).
The party supported the motion of no confidence in the Speaker due to her abuse of power, unilateral actions during council meetings, and her failure to address the misconduct of her party members during council sessions.
Some of the standing rules that the Speaker applies inconsistently, selectively, or not at all include:
Maintaining order;
Ignoring serious violations by a councillor or councillors; and
Ignoring grossly disorderly behaviour.
The Freedom Front Plus has repeatedly requested the Speaker in the past, through formal channels, to familiarise herself with the Municipal Structures Act in order to fulfil her duties and mandate as Speaker.
The latest addition to her long list of violations involves allegations of misconduct and fraud in her office, which were presented in a report before the council.
The Freedom Front Plus also supported the motion of no confidence in the Mayor.
The party warned him that the motion of no confidence against him is a clear indication of his inability to establish steadfast leadership. Motions of no confidence in a mayor bring instability, especially while service delivery continues to crumble.
It is unfortunate that the motions of no confidence were unsuccessful in ending the unstable marriage between the ANC and EFF and restoring residents’ trust in the metro council.
