Ekurhuleni roads in critical condition

The condition of roads in the Ekurhuleni Metro is worsening at an alarming rate; a direct consequence of poor planning, underfunding and mismanagement.

Most roads in the Metro are riddled with potholes that damage residents’ vehicles, resulting in life-threatening driving conditions.

One such example is Marignane Avenue in Bonaero Park, which is more pothole than tar road and where it is safer to drive on the sidewalk than down the street.

The amount of R449 million earmarked for road infrastructure repairs in the 2024/25 budget is clearly not enough to cover pothole repairs, road resurfacing and ongoing maintenance.

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) demands that more funds be earmarked for road infrastructure maintenance in the proposed draft budget for the 2025/26 financial year, before it is too late.

Currently, residents are paying the price for the Metro’s poor leadership and ongoing neglect.

They are compelled to repair potholes out of their own pockets while the Metro diverts funds elsewhere without any accountability.

The party strongly condemns this exploitation of the people and demands that the money saved by the Metro, through residents doing repair work, should be reinvested in critical infrastructure.

Ekurhuleni residents deserve safe, functional roads, not more empty promises and crumbling infrastructure. Residents should not have to drive on sidewalks to avoid potholes.
