The Ekurhuleni Finance Department is on the brink of collapse as 78% of its key positions are currently vacant.
This was revealed in a recent report by the Department.
Other revelations include:
• Only 21,9% of all approved positions are filled.
• The internal audit division, responsible for monitoring corruption and irregularities, operates with just two instead of 13 staff members – only 15% of its positions are filled.
• A shocking 81% of the positions at supply chain management, responsible for tenders and procurement, is vacant – creating a massive risk for misappropriation.
• Only 12 of the 43 financial management positions, the heart of the city’s fiscal control, are filled.
This staffing crisis means Ekurhuleni lacks the internal capacity to responsibly manage its finances and protect taxpayers’ money.
The ANC/EFF coalition government plunged Ekurhuleni’s Finance Department into a crisis.
Due to the shortage of staff, budgets are not properly managed, tenders are not adequately scrutinised and corruption is rampant.
The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) demands the following:
• Urgent appointment of competent, non-political staff in all critical positions.
• A comprehensive audit of current structures and appointment processes.
• A public report on the progress of reforms tabled to the Council.
Ekurhuleni deserves better. Reckless governance is putting residents’ tax money at risk.
The Freedom Front Plus will continue to fight for financial discipline, accountability and service delivery.
