On Thursday the 18th of June 2020, the Eastern Cape Department of Education tabled its plan of action to comply with the prescribed health and safety regulations to curb the spread of Covid-19. At present, it is falling short.
Among other things, the plan proposes that teachers will present classes on a rotation basis to different learners at different times to solve the problem of overcrowded classrooms and to ensure that social distance is maintained to curb the spread of Covid-19.
Since schools re-opened for Grade 7 and 12 learners, 15 schools had to be closed again due to the virus.
During a virtual meeting with the Eastern Cape Premier, Oscar Mabuyane, the FF Plus pointed out that the Department is not yet ready to accommodate and teach learners and that the problems must be rectified as soon as possible.
The FF Plus also realises that learners must return to school soon and that the phasing in of the other grades must be sped up. It can, however, not happen before all the necessary health and safety measures are in place to ensure that learners and teachers are adequately protected.
