The FF Plus welcomes the Constitutional Court’s ruling on independent candidates and its dismissal of the Independent Candidate Association of South Africa’s application to have the Electoral Amendment Act declared unconstitutional.
The ruling provides more certainty that the elections will indeed take place. The Electoral Commission has already set its sights on 22 May 2024 for the general elections. It can now proceed with its planning.
In the case of Build One SA which was granted permission to approach the Constitutional Court, the outcome of the application should not have a significant impact on the elections.
Build One’s application relates to the specific number of signatures required for independent candidates. If it is successful, only a small adjustment needs to be made.
Everyone in South Africa is eager to know whether the elections will take place and this ruling creates more certainty that it will take place.
