The FF Plus and other opposition parties in the Western Cape Legislature have called for a meeting with the Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt. Gen. Thembisile Patekile, to determine whether the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Mr JP Smith, was tipped off about the planned raid on his office.
The request follows allegations that Smith was informed of the possibility of a raid last year already and mentioned it to Ms Helen Zille, the DA federal chairperson.
These allegations seriously undermine the integrity of the police investigation and need to be clarified.
Irrespective of the merit of the case, it is of the utmost importance to ensure that an investigation is not unduly influenced and that all allegations of corruption are investigated thoroughly for justice to prevail.
The FF Plus is, furthermore, committed to the rule of law and will fulfil its role to ensure there is no interference in the investigation, whilst seeing to it that the investigation is not exploited and exaggerated for political gain if it has no merit.
