Budget Vote Debate: Higher Education in South Africa is no longer a passport to a certain future

Higher education is supposed to add value to a person’s life, as well as to that of his/her community and the country as a whole. Under the current education system, it is however increasingly becoming a mere rubber stamp to a sombre future, Adv. Anton Alberts, the FF Plus’ parliamentary spokesperson on Higher Education, says.

He said universities are increasingly getting more students with a large cognitive backlog which is the making of the department of basic education, and higher education then makes the problem worse through interventions based on ideology rather than pedagogy.

“It is clear that revolutionary changes are needed to overhaul the Department of Higher Education, even if it is not the revolution that the minister has in mind,” Adv. Alberts says.
