The ANC is demonstrating its irresponsibility with its endeavour to change Brandfort's name while there are much more pressing service delivery problems that must be addressed.
The name change is nothing but an election gimmick to divert voters' attention from the poor service delivery.
The FF Plus has launched a petition enabling residents to electronically lodge an objection in terms of the South African Geographical Names Council Act.
Objections can be lodged until the 4th of September 2021.
Brandfort residents are severely affected by poor service delivery.
And the proposed name change will have unacceptable financial consequences for all spheres of government. The name change will in no way contribute to alleviating poverty, infrastructure development or local economic growth.
In addition, the ANC government also demonstrates disregard for the town's history and early development with the proposed name change.
This name change will, furthermore, violate the agreement of 1994 according to which municipalities could be given new names, while the names of towns and cities must be retained.
Thus, the municipality is known as Masilonyana while the town's name must remain Brandfort in recognition, and as an equal expression, of its history and our diversity.
