The ongoing billing crisis in the Johannesburg Metro highlights the ANC and its coalition partners’ financial mismanagement of the city.
The Johannesburg Metro has promised a functional and transparent billing system for years, yet taxpayers keep receiving excessively inflated bills or bills reflecting incorrect charges, if they receive any bills at all.
This not only undermines service delivery, but also erodes residents’ faith in the city’s administration.
The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) is inundated with complaints from residents who are threatened with service disconnections even though their accounts are paid in full. Others complain of unexplained monthly bill increases.
Businesses, already struggling due to the economy, are unfairly targeted and have to spend hours in long queues at municipal offices to dispute erroneous bills.
In some cases, residents have to resort to legal action to resolve their issues. For instance, a resident who received a utility bill of R26 million had to seek court intervention to prevent the city from disconnecting their electricity and water.
Treating loyal taxpayers like this is unacceptable.
The city’s failure to resolve this crisis comes down to administrative incompetence.
Instead of prioritising efficient systems and quality customer service, the city continues to waste money on flawed technology and incompetent service providers, while making endless promises of reform that never materialise.
The Freedom Front Plus will not let the matter rest, but will keep pressuring the city to upgrade its billing system to ensure that taxpayers receive accurate bills.
