In the view of the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus), the oversight visit to Germiston by the Ekurhuleni Metro Mayor, Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, is no more than a transparent political stunt ahead of the upcoming local government elections.
After years of disregard, the Mayor is suddenly willing to listen to service delivery complaints – a gesture even social media labelled futile.
Germiston, one of Ekurhuleni’s oldest towns, is plagued by persistent water and power outages as well as sewage spills under the rule of the ANC/EFF coalition.
Residents frequently have to put up with taps running dry, critically low levels in reservoirs and exploding transformers.
Businesses are crippled, jobs are lost and families are denied basic dignity.
The coalition ignored residents’ complaints for three years; the Mayor did not conduct a single oversight visit while the people stood in long queues at water tankers, school children had no access to potable water or during any of the power outages lasting days.
But now, with the elections just around the corner, the Mayor shows up with banners, luxury cars and cameras to capture the display of supposed concern.
The Freedom Front Plus finds it insulting; Germiston residents deserve action, not political theatrics.
The only way to truly improve Germiston residents’ quality of life is to upgrade and maintain critical infrastructure.
The Freedom Front Plus will keep fighting, both in and outside of the Council, for sustainable solutions to ensure the people of Germiston receive the level of service they deserve.
