Human rights are but a chimera under ANC rule. Any progress made in this regard has been undone since 1994.
South Africa’s literacy rate plummeted over the last decade and today, 82% of all Grade 4 learners are unable to read. And yet, mother-tongue education is scorned.
Over the same time period, the number of water supply systems that are in a critical state of decay has increased by more than 10%.
State hospitals have declined drastically to dysfunctionality, resulting in the needless loss of lives. More than 17 million households do not have enough to eat.
The ANC is indifferent to South Africans’ dignity and its thinking is stuck in the past. It keeps grappling with the past, but the people are suffering and starving in the present.
Ensuring access to clean water is not a priority for government. Consequently, water supply is following in the footsteps of power supply. Government was warned about the impending crisis, but nothing was done, except for more looting and stealing.
Under ANC rule, the water crisis will be much worse than the power crisis. The funds earmarked for maintaining water infrastructure are looted in municipalities and ultimately end up in cadres’ pockets.
South Africa is a water-scarce country and yet water supply systems are left to collapse. The ANC simply does not care that people are suffering as a result of the water shortages.
The student aid scheme NSFAS is riddled with corruption, still, the ANC keeps boasting about the bursaries awarded by the Scheme. It is a disgrace; many more bursaries could have been awarded had NSFAS not been crippled by corruption.
Legislation aimed at eradicating corruption from government is doomed to fail. The only real solution is to replace the ANC with a new government and dispensation which prioritises human rights and service delivery.
On 29 May this year, South Africans have the opportunity to elect a government that will restore human dignity through human rights.
