The Sedibeng District Municipality has turned into a battlefield for ANC faction fights after the Speaker, Moipoine Modikeng, was suddenly stripped of her position.
The ANC caucus made this strategic move just two days before a critical council meeting during which a motion of no confidence in the Mayor, Lerato Maloka, was due to be tabled.
Clearly, the ANC is prepared to sacrifice its own Speaker and sabotage the entire council process to prevent the Mayor from being called to account.
The council meeting scheduled for 27 March has now been postponed indefinitely with a short notice confirming that the Speaker’s position is “vacant”.
It is not only the Speaker’s head that rolled due to the ANC’s faction fights, but also the head of the Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Development, Lulama Gamede.
The infighting has already resulted in the 2025/26 adjustment budget not being tabled to the Council in time to comply with the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA).
The Sedibeng community finds itself caught in the crossfire of the ANC’s faction fights and power games, which are paralysing the Municipality so it cannot fulfil its basic duties.
The Freedom Front Plus insists that the Council appoint a new Speaker as soon as possible so council meetings can resume.
By postponing council meetings and delaying budgets, the ANC’s internal divisions are causing instability to the detriment of Sedibeng residents.
