The recent 55 mm rainfall in Aberdeen initially brought relief, but it quickly turned into frustration and damage for residents due to the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality’s failure to maintain storm water drains and irrigation canals.
Despite repeated complaints and formal requests to the Municipal Manager, Mr Bennie Arendse, no meaningful action was taken. Instead, residents came up against empty promises and delays. This ongoing dereliction reinforces the perception that Aberdeen is the Municipality’s “forgotten child”.
The consequences of this failure are so serious that the Municipality could face civil claims for damages.
The community’s confidence in the Municipality has noticeably waned as leadership rest on their laurels instead of decisively addressing the problem.
The situation in Aberdeen should compel the Municipality to come up with a clear plan and timeframe for repairing and maintaining storm water drainage systems and irrigation canals. An independent investigation should also be launched to probe the constant failure to deliver this basic service.
Aberdeen residents deserve better than a municipality that fails to perform its basic duties, exposing the community to needless damage and neglect.
The time has come for residents to use their vote to put an end to the ANC leadership’s incompetence and steer the town in a new direction.
On 18 March, residents of Ward 7 have the opportunity to take the first step in the right direction by voting for the Freedom Front Plus, which genuinely serves the interests of Aberdeen.
