Urgent intervention needed to stop pollution of stream in Kempton Park

The FF Plus requested the Ekurhuleni Metro’s Mayoral Committee Member for Environmental Resources and Waste Management, Leshaka Manamela, to urgently put a stop to the illegal dumping of building rubble in a stream in Constantia Street Pomona, Kempton Park.

This stream, like many others, disembogues into several large water basins in and around Kempton Park where pink flamingos settle just before the South African winter when they travel to Tanzania to breed. One of these basins is situated in the popular Pomula Park Nature Reserve.

Trucks and bakkies have been seen dumping building rubble into the stream.

Another cause for concern for the FF Plus is that the residents of nearby informal settlements are dumping their garbage on the banks of the stream.

Meanwhile, the construction of a bridge across the stream is currently underway and will, hopefully, be completed by the end of the month.

The party will pay frequent oversight visits to the site to ensure that all rubble is removed.

The FF Plus proposed the following to Mr Manamela to stop the pollution:

  1. 1. Increase oversight and monitoring: Immediately deploy environmental officials to monitor the affected area and prevent any more illegal dumping.
  2. 2. Stringent enforcement of environmental regulations: Take swift legal action against offenders to ensure they are held accountable and others are deterred from committing the same offences.
  3. 3. Community education and involvement: Launch comprehensive community outreach programmes to educate residents about the importance of conserving the city’s natural habitat and the legal ramifications of illegal dumping.

The FF Plus will raise the matter during the next council meeting and plead for the implementation of measures to protect Kempton Park’s natural resources.

Illegal dumping is a punishable offence and those who commit it could face fines.
