The FF Plus welcomes the proclamation by President Cyril Ramaphosa authorising the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate maladministration in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro (NMBM).
The SIU will investigate, among other things, whether the goods or services rendered by or on behalf of the Metro concerning LED street and floodlights, and the related payments followed a procedure which is fair, competitive, transparent, equitable and cost-effective.
The investigation will also probe any unlawful or inappropriate conduct by officials or employees of the Metro, the relevant suppliers and service providers, or any other person or entity.
The FF Plus considers the investigation a step in the right direction to put an end to corruption and the misappropriation of tax money in the NMBM.
Should the investigation uncover any criminal conduct by officials or service providers, the party insists that they should be criminally charged at once.
It should serve as a deterrent for other officials and entities who deal with public funds as if it belongs to them.
This will ensure that taxpayers’ money is spent responsibly and effectively.
