The FF Plus welcomes the fact that the restoration of the historic court building in Krugersdorp was completed last week.
The party as chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Tourism in the Mogale City Local Municipality, constantly put pressure on the relevant department to restore the historic building in Kommissaris Street to its former glory.
The court building’s doors will be opened to the public soon.
Construction of the stone court building commenced in 1890 and it was officially opened the following year by former President Paul Kruger.
In 1976, the Renaissance Baroque-style building was officially closed for court proceedings and was turned into a museum in 1995.
The building deteriorated through the years and was closed for the public at the beginning of the year, whereafter restoration work amounting to R12 million commenced. The biggest expense was fixing the roof.
Artefacts from the colonial period as well as before and after are preserved in the court museum. An exhibition of traditional spears (assegaai), old guns and other objects of interest will be put on display for the public.
Production companies will also use the building as a set for shooting films.
In the FF Plus’s view, it is extremely important to preserve this historic building for posterity as it gives them an opportunity to authentically experience the past.
