The service delivery of the Emfuleni Local Municipality (Evaton, Sebokeng, Vaal Oewer, Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging) has declined to such an extent that Vanderbijlpark’s refuse is removed only once every 14 days.
Emfuleni only has three refuse removal trucks at its disposal, which have to service an area of 966km²,
even though 21 trucks are needed to remove all household refuse on a weekly basis.
The 18 unusable refuse removal trucks are either broken down or contractors stopped repairs on them due to unpaid bills.
Vanderbijlpark residents have to drive 30km out of town to dump their refuse at an authorised dumping site.
People have been attacked at the dumping site in the past, so it is dangerous to go there.
In addition, taxpayers residing in areas with a 100% collection rate have joined the Emfuleni Ratepayers’ Association and are now withholding their service fees.
The FF Plus does not blame taxpayers for taking such drastic steps, but it is further impoverishing the Municipality.
More and more residents are making use of small businesses that offer refuse removal services.
Refuse is often also dumped next to roads or in open fields before being set on fire.
This makes it hard to see, thus endangering motorists.
The FF Plus warned the Emfuleni Municipality to stop the mismanagement. The Municipality’s failure to remove refuse is posing serious health risks to residents, and has resulted in a rat and cockroach infestation.
It is time to oust the ANC from power in Gauteng in the upcoming elections and replace it with a coalition government of which the FF Plus is part.
Together, we can restore and rebuild Gauteng.
