The Mogale City Local Municipality’s sudden intervention to partially put out the Luipaardsvlei landfill fire in Krugersdorp is too little too late.
This is the fifth fire to break out at the landfill site since the beginning of the year.
For the past week, the FF Plus and residents have been putting immense pressure on the Municipality to contain the fire. Residents complained of, among other things, hay fever, burning eyes, asthma attacks and the like.
The Municipality has now hired equipment and put out most of the fire. The recycling section is, however, still on fire resulting in a burning stench and a cloud of smoke enveloping the town.
The FF Plus has already reported the fires at the landfill to the Human Rights Commission (HRC) and requested an investigation into the terrible condition of the site.
The party’s councillors visited the dumping site on Tuesday and will continue to conduct frequent oversight visits to ensure that the Municipality is making headway in bringing the fire under control.
The party also cautioned the Municipality to implement contingency plans to prevent any more fires and ensure that the landfill complies with the prescribed standards.
The FF Plus will continue to put pressure on Mogale City to ensure that residents can live and work in an environment that is not harmful to their health.
