The Johan Koen Bird Park and Dam in Ninapark (Pretoria), an FF Plus initiative in the Tshwane Metro, is open for visitors.
This project is the first of its kind in Tshwane and was undertaken in cooperation with Mr Pieter Dicks, parks director, and Dinah Shopa from nature conservation.
The Metro’s City Manager, Johan Mettler, approved the area as a community district upliftment programme last Friday.
This means that there is now a structured cooperative agreement between the community and the Metro to maintain the area by keeping it clean and neat.
The FF Plus’s former Mayoral Committee Member for Health initiated the project to, among other things, teach children more about nature conservation and to help improve residents’ mental health.
People of all ages are at risk of developing mental health problems, and the vision for the park is to serve as a safe haven for young and old where they can relax and enjoy the tranquillity of nature.
The FF Plus invites residents to participate in community clean-ups at the park as well as other events which will take place there.
Cleaning and maintaining areas of natural beauty contribute to the conservation of the environment and local wildlife and bird species.
