The FF Plus submitted proposals to the Ekurhuleni Metro’s Energy Department to prevent or limit the damage caused to critical power infrastructure by veld fires.
It follows a recent veld fire near Modderfontein Road in Kempton Park which destroyed power infrastructure and left the residents of Ester Park without power for 48 hours.
Fire services battled to contain the fire for hours.
A second veld fire broke out on Wednesday morning next to Mooifontein Road in Terenure, Kempton Park.
The FF Plus subsequently requested the Energy Department to take decisive steps to prevent such incidents and submitted the following proposals:
- 1. Routine inspections and frequent maintenance of power infrastructure to identify and address potential fire hazards.
- 2. Establishing and maintaining fire lanes to protect critical infrastructure and prevent the spread of veld fires.
- 3. Launching awareness campaigns to educate residents about fire safety and precautionary measures against veld fires.
- 4. Improving the capacity and readiness of local emergency response teams to effectively fight veld fires.
The FF Plus will cooperate closely with the Metro’s energy Department to curb damage to critical infrastructure.
