The FF Plus opposed a recent motion of the ANC in the Ekurhuleni Metro Council which aims to proclaim land for the purpose of developing the Dukathole informal settlement in Ward 35.
The party’s stance is that the Metro’s budget simply does not have the funds for this.
The adjustment budget, which was recently adopted, also does not make provision for this type of expense.
Ekurhuleni is already struggling to provide the most basic of services to existing residential areas and certainly does not have the funds needed to provide services to yet another informal settlement.
In addition, the motion fails to outline the financial impact that the development is expected to have on the Metro. It appears to be nothing but ANC delusions that are not rooted in reality.
There is also no indication that an environmental impact study was conducted to determine whether the land is indeed suitable for human habitation.
Besides, Ekurhuleni adopted a plan for incorporating 119 of the informal settlements in the Metro into nine planned mega-cities. Its objective was to formalise informal settlements, but so far, not one mega-city has been created.
The ANC motion seems to be no more than opportunistic politicking in the runup to the general elections.
It is time to oust the ANC from provincial government and replace it with a competent and accountable coalition government with the FF Plus as governing partner.
