The FF Plus gave the Emalahleni Local Municipality management a written ultimatum to address the ongoing sewage crisis affecting the Municipality (Kriel, Ogies, Phola, eMalahleni/Witbank) by the end of September.
If nothing is done, the FF Plus will lodge a criminal complaint against the Municipal Manager, Mr Humphrey Mayisela, for negligent and poor municipal governance.
There are serious concerns about the immediate environmental and health risks posed by the raw sewage spilling from the sewage plant in Ben Fleur into the surrounding areas and seeping into the nearby water sources.
The sewage pollution is caused by a lack of maintenance of old infrastructure and blocked drains.
The party had already requested in August 2022 that a technical team should be sent out to probe the situation. But no action was taken over the past year.
The FF Plus also voiced its concern about the pollution during a general council meeting at the beginning of September.
All the abovementioned requests for action were blatantly ignored.
It is an absolute shame that an essential resource such as water is jeopardised by lax and incompetent local ANC governments like Emalahleni.
The FF Plus will keep fighting for residents’ right to live and work in a clean environment. This community deserves better than the ANC.
