Ekurhuleni budget insufficient to ensure good service delivery

The FF Plus has for the second time this year rejected the ANC/EFF-controlled Ekurhuleni Metro Council’s 2024/25 budget seeing as it is insufficient to ensure good service delivery.

The FF Plus and other opposition parties’ objections prevented the budget from being adopted and it was sent back for further review.

It is unacceptable, in the FF Plus’s view, that the budget which was tabled on 7 June is exactly the same as the budget tabled to the Council on 31 May, which was rejected.

The ANC/EFF metro government was supposed to make the necessary adjustments after the budget was rejected, but failed to do so.

Funds are recklessly allocated in the budget without striking a balance to ensure proper service delivery to all Ekurhuleni residents. Boosting economic growth is also not prioritised.

It seems that addressing service delivery problems, and doing maintenance and repairs are only prioritised for informal settlements. The FF Plus is of the opinion that service delivery should be evenly balanced across the Metro.

In addition, the proposed tariff hikes are not reasonable and will only plunge residents into greater financial difficulty.

It is abundantly clear that the Mayoral Committee Member for Finance, Nkululeko Dunga of the EFF, has no idea of what is going on in Ekurhuleni and is completely out of touch with the Metro’s realities.

The FF Plus finds it unacceptable that the ANC/EFF metro government is holding Ekurhuleni residents to ransom with its insufficient and unfair 2024/25 budget.

The FF Plus will continue to try and have its proposals and contributions included in the adjusted budget, which must be tabled for approval for the third time on 14 June 2024.
