Crematorium in Ekurhuleni closed for upgrades for five years

The crematorium managed by the Ekurhuleni Metro, the Lala Ngoxolo Crematorium, has been closed for upgrades for the past five years.

And in the meantime, residents must shell out large amounts to have a private crematorium cremate their loved ones.

The Lala Ngoxolo Crematorium was closed for upgrades in 2019. There was only one furnace that could be used for cremations.

In the past, this Crematorium carried out up to 150 cremations per month, but had to scale down operations to a mere ten per month.

The only functional furnace also presented problems, such as overheating.

No solutions to get the crematorium fully functional again could be found during a recent council meeting on 25 January.

The matter was referred to the Metro’s Department of Environmental Resources and Waste Management for the third time.

This serves as more proof of the ANC/EFF coalition’s inability to successfully govern the Metro for the benefit of its residents.
