The arrest and charges against Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, former president Jacob Zuma’s daughter, send the right message regarding incitement to commit violence in South Africa, and the FF Plus welcomes her prosecution.
Zuma-Sambudla appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court today on charges relating to the large-scale unrest in July 2021 and was released with a warning.
The FF Plus expects the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to handle the prosecution properly and not give her any special treatment because she is a high-profile person.
The fact that she is a Member of Parliament makes the charges so much more serious and casts aspersions on the leadership material in the ranks of Jacob Zuma’s MK party.
Zuma-Sambudla is facing charges under section 14 of the Protection of Constitutional Democracy against Terrorist and Related Activities Act.
The FF Plus hopes that The Hawks conducted a thorough investigation and that Zuma-Sambudla will receive an appropriate sentence if found guilty.
The case should send a loud and clear message to the public that no-one is above the law so that history, such as the 2021 unrest, does not repeat itself.
Human relations in South Africa are already fragile given the ANC government’s years of steps against minorities, in particular, and the country cannot afford to have leaders who incite unrest and violence.
