David Johan Matthysen, better known as Omie, completed his schooling in Garies. He received army training and then farmed at Vioolsdrift for about ten years. He subsequently worked in the tourism industry for six years and then returned to Garies. As a farmer and resident, his whole life has been in Kamiesberg. Omie is a God-fearing person and his faith plays an important role in his life. He is loyal, honest and treats others as he would like to be treated himself.
“My goals for the community are to address the basic needs of the town. Water is life. Therefore, I believe that the water problem is the most important one that needs urgent attention. Electricity needs to be improved and fixed, so that residents have access to basic services. I further believe that honesty and fairness must start with the municipality. I would be glad to bring about positive change, so that our town can function better and residents can live with pride. I want to pursue solutions with the community.”
