Today's ruling by the Constitutional Court in which former President Jacob Zuma was sentenced to, among other things, 15 months of imprisonment for contempt of court is a true victory for constitutional democracy in South Africa.
The FF Plus welcomes the Constitutional Court's ruling and endorses it.
The wheels of justice turn slowly, at times seemingly too slowly, but the ruling does send the right message, i.e. that justice will ultimately prevail.
Acting Chief Justice Sisi Khampepe instructed that Zuma must turn himself in at a police station within five days to commence serving his sentence. If he fails to do so, he must be arrested within three days.
The world will see that South Africa's judiciary and constitutional democracy are standing strong and it is indeed a positive development.
The judgement sends a loud and clear message that Zuma and everyone else in South Africa must realise that they are not above the law and that they must respect it.
It also sends a clear message to everyone called to appear and give evidence before the Zondo Commission that failure to do so will have serious consequences.
Zuma would do well to obey the ruling and to peacefully turn himself in to serve his punishment.
Over the past year, he said numerous times that he would rather go to prison than give evidence before Zondo and that is exactly what he is going to have to do now.
