The FF Plus notes with disappointment that the Western Cape Premier, Mr Alan Winde, has refused to call a referendum allowing the people of the Western Cape to request greater autonomy for their province.
In terms of the Constitution, Mr Winde has the power to do so.
The people of this province ought to be granted the opportunity to express their vision for the future by means of a referendum. It is the right, and democratic, thing to do.
The FF Plus in the Western Cape fully supports it and is unequivocally of the opinion that the people of the Western Cape should be allowed to speak for themselves.
There is already widespread support among the people for holding a referendum in the Western Cape. Online polls have confirmed this on more than one occasion.
The more than 800 000 registered members of CapeXit, which is seeking independence for the Western Cape and has already expressed that it is in favour of a referendum, serve as further proof.
Winde’s hiding behind the Kaapse Forum case regarding the constitutionality of referendums, which is currently being heard by the Constitutional Court, is not good enough.
If the Premier of the Western Cape really does have the people of the province’s best interests at heart, he would support the proposal for a referendum.
The people of the Western Cape have the right to express their opinion on the matter and to decide whether they want to remain part of the rest of the country which is being destroyed by the ANC.
