The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) welcomes the Western Cape Provincial Parliament’s decision to establish an ad hoc committee to investigate crime patterns and trends in the province.
This step follows the Freedom Front Plus recently questioning the Premier, Alan Winde, about why he has failed to deliver on his promise to devolve policing powers to the Western Cape after seven years. According to the Premier, a new policing model is currently under consideration.
Although the motion establishing the committee does not explicitly refer to the devolution of policing powers, the Freedom Front Plus regards it as a step in the right direction.
The committee’s findings could provide valuable information on where the current system is failing and what additional powers, resources and functions the Western Cape needs to combat violent crime more effectively.
The Freedom Front Plus is encouraged by the general support that was expressed for the party’s recommendations during the recent session. It demonstrates a growing willingness to seek common ground and cooperate to find solutions to prioritise residents’ safety.
The fight against violent crime transcends party politics. Wherever there is common ground, parties should stand together to ensure the safety and security of communities.
