Water tanker disappears without a trace in Mogale City

A municipal water tanker with a replacement value of between R1,6 million and R2 million has disappeared without a trace from the fleet of the Mogale City Local Municipality (Krugersdorp, Magaliesburg, Muldersdrift).

To date, there is no information available on where, when or how the vehicle was stolen.

In the 2024/25 service delivery performance report, the disappearance of the tanker is merely acknowledged. The report is, however, vague and incomplete, providing no indication of whether the tanker was insured, whether a criminal case was lodged or if anyone will be held accountable.

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) demanded answers regarding whether the municipal premises were properly secured and whether the tanker was fitted with a GPS tracking device.

The irony is stark: in the same report where the disappearance of a tanker is acknowledged, the Municipality boasts that two new tankers have been procured.

Meanwhile, it remains unclear how a vehicle worth millions could simply disappear without the Council being informed.

Water tankers are not a luxury. They are an essential lifeline for communities regularly experiencing water shortages.

The disappearance of this critical resource deals a severe blow to residents who depend on this service daily.

The party has directed questions to the mayor, Lucky Sele, and the mayoral committee member for corporate support services, Kholeka Mandyu, to provide answers to the council and the community on how a water tanker worth millions of rand could disappear without a trace, and what measures will be implemented to prevent it from happening again.
